The Open Project / Create Project Dialog
Whenever you open a project or create a new one, you will be presented with the Project properties dialog. Here. you give your project a name, define where it will be stored and configure the connections it needs to make.
As a minimum, you must:
- Give your project a name, and the location where it will be stored.
- Enter details of the source connection (i.e. where records will be migrated FROM)
- Enter details of the target connection (i.e. where records will be migrated TO)
There are also tabs for defining a third connection to provide input into the project, defining a reporting server and project options. You can also enter project notes. If you created your project from a template, the project notes tab will typically contain some information and advice relating to this template.
The example below shows a project for a migration of data between two ServiceNow instances.
Project Options and Metadata Caching
Whenever Precision Bridge opens a project, it needs to obtain certain metadata from the connections for use in the project design/editing interface. This will include definitions of tables, fields, choices etc.
The first time a project is opened, this data is typically read in from the server. For servers with many tables and other objects, this can take some time.
By default, for all connection types other than databases, Precision Bridge will create a cache of this metadata within the project folder. This way, the next time a project is opened there is less of a delay.
One thing to note about this caching is that it will not automatically pick up any changes made. So for example, if you add a new custom table, the cache will not reflect this, the table will not be recognised by Precision Bridge and you will be unable to create a mapping for it.
To force Precision Bridge to pick up any changes, you must go to the option tab when opening the project and select the force cache refresh option for the server(s) (source or target) that have been changed.
If you want to, you can switch off caching altogether by unchecking the Enable Cache... option for the server. This will force Precision Bridge to get the metadata fresh from the server each time the project is opened.
